Mandatory online trainings, additional compensation, APTPUO workshop, and other important announcements

APTPUO Office is Now Open on Friday


The APTPUO Office, located in room 124 of the Jock-Turcot University Center is now open on Friday. Members may drop in, call, or email us from Monday to Friday. APTPUO staff are happy to assist with any issues or questions.
 

Mandatory Online Training


At the end of February, members teaching a course this term received an email notification from the Employer regarding mandatory online trainings. The APTPUO has reached an agreement with the Employer that all members who complete all of the mandatory online training shall receive $200.00 in recognition of this additional work. The amount will be deposited directly in your bank account in mid-June 2015. For more information, please contact the office of the Association.

Those who have already completed all of the training modules in the Fall 2014 session will be compensated.

 

General Application - March 31 2015


Remember that the deadline to submit a general application is Tuesday, March 31 2015 in accordance with Article 5.6.4 of the Collective Agreement.

General applications are considered by the University when no qualified candidates have applied for a specific course or when they need to hire a part-time professor at the last-minute. Following the last round of bargaining, the Association successfully negotiated that members who submit a general application before 31 March of each year as per Article 5.6.4, regardless of whether they teach a course, shall continue to maintain their membership status and seniority points.

How to file a general application:

  • choose the "Apply without posting" option on the main postings page (or visit the website);
  • log in;
  • select a session;
  • select the appropriate Faculty and Academic Unit;
  • indicate the number of courses you wish to teach in a session in the box;
  • update your record of employment under Teaching UO and/or Other Teaching tabs;
  • submit your application and C.V.;
  • repeat for every academic unit for which you would like to teach and for each session.

You can also check the box “To submit a general application prior to March 31st, please check this box” under the “Job Postings” tab when submitting a general application before March 31st 2015. Additional Compensation - Accommodations and supplemental examinations


The Association and the Employer are in ongoing discussions in relation to accommodation requests and supplementary examinations. For deferred exams, minor details remain to be addressed, but an agreement of the interpretation of Article 5.2.2.1 should be released shortly. The Association will communicate the agreement as soon as possible.
 
In the meantime, do not forget to file a request with your unit or department to be compensated for any additional work for supplementary exams (including midterms) and accommodations.

 

Online Course Evaluations


The Association has commented on the Senate Committee of Teaching’s study and recommendations to change the course evaluation process by moving it from a paper-based to an electronic format. Students would have two weeks to complete the course evaluation online and would continue to have the allocated 20 minute in-class time to complete it on their electronic devices.

uOttawa President Search Committee


In December, the Association sought out the opinions of members on what part-time professors are looking for in their next University President. We received quite a few responses and have since sent a letter to the University’s search committee. APTPUO members believe that the University of Ottawa needs a President who is an active scholar and who reflects the diversity of our campus and membership.

APTPUO's Union Council


Over the course of this academic year, the APTPUO has put into action a Union Council. This Council is made up of part-time professors that have the additional role of being department representatives. We are happy to report that this Council has provided us with the opportunity to engage with members directly and to ensure that we are up-to-date on issues that affect part-time professors within specific departments.

Part-time professors are not represented at the Faculty level, the Senate level, or at the Board of Governors – the highest decision-making body of the University. Because our members teach about half of all courses at the undergraduate level, the Association advocates for the inclusion of part-time professors in university decision-making bodies.

 

Interunion Meetings


Each month, representatives from the APTPUO meet with representatives of other campus unions (students, full-time faculty, support staff, TA’s, RA’s, and IT staff). Over the past weeks, we have been working on providing a collective response to the changes of the University Policy 67A and Procedure 36 on discrimination and harassment. We have built relationships with other unions to be able to provide the University with strong and united feedback on policies that affect our members.

One of the major changes that are being brought forward by the University is to have this policy and procedure affect everyone on campus, not just students. If you have any feedback, please contact us by March 23 2015.

 

CAUT - Sign a Pledge of Solidarity


The Canadian Association of University Teachers’ ongoing campaign to defend contract and precarious academic employment is seeking petition signatures. CUPE 3903 & CUPE 3902 on Strike


Members of CUPE 3903’s two units representing graduate assistants, teaching assistants, and research assistants remain on strike at York University while members of CUPE 3903’s contract faculty accepted a deal. In other parts of the city, members of CUPE 3902’s graduate student teaching assistants and research assistants at the University of Toronto have been on strike for over a week and the University has shown no interest in returning to the bargaining table. CUPE 3902 Unit 3, representing contract instructors have voted to ratify a three year Collective Agreement.

Contract professors at the University of Toronto and York University experience similar issues to our membership: precarious employment, large class sizes, low wages, and lack of job security. As tenure opportunities diminish, and contract professors become a form of cheap labour, Universities are increasingly relying on keeping our members precarious and our working conditions difficult via an increase in austerity policies.
